But there is another reality: some of the most meaningful things in us are formed when life presses us. Just like oil is not visible until something is crushed, there are depths within people that only emerge under pressure. What we often try to escape may actually be where something valuable is being drawn out of us.

Life here is not slow. It is structured, demanding, and often unforgiving.

And in the middle of it all, most people are not looking for theology; they are looking for stability. For peace. For something that helps them hold it all together.

That is where grace first meets us.

Not in a church setting alone, but in ordinary moments; when you made a mistake and still found a way forward, when something should have gone wrong but didn’t, when strength showed up in you that you cannot fully explain.

That is grace as most people understand it.

Die to Yourself

There is a quiet paradox in the kingdom of God.
In most places, life rises through ambition. In the kingdom, life rises through surrender.
The world teaches us to protect ourselves, promote ourselves, and preserve our
interests. But the gospel whispers a different invitation: die to yourself, and you will
truly live.
Jesus once described this mystery using the language of the earth.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it
remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.”
(John 12:24)

A seed must disappear into the soil before it can become a harvest. It vanishes beneath
the dirt like a story that seems unfinished. Yet beneath that quiet burial, life begins to multiply.

The same is true for the soul.

Glory in God’s kingdom is not manufactured by visibility or applause. It is cultivated in
hidden places, much like roots growing silently beneath the surface. Before Joseph
stood in Pharaoh’s palace, he passed through the darkness of a pit and the loneliness
of a prison. Before David wore a crown, he learned obedience in caves. Before Jesus
rose in resurrection glory, He bowed in surrender at the cross.

The pattern is unmistakable: death before glory.

Dying to self is not the loss of life; it is the release of a greater one. It is the surrender of
pride so humility can breathe. It is the quiet crucifixion of ego so Christ can live freely
within us. As the apostle Paul wrote:
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”
(Galatians 2:20)

 

To die to self is…

To die to self is to loosen our grip on control. It is to exchange our personal agenda for
God’s divine purpose. It is like a river surrendering to the ocean, what appears like loss
becomes expansion.

In truth, many of life’s most sacred transformations occur in places the world does not
celebrate. The moments when recognition fades, when obedience is costly, when
service feels unseen; these are often the very spaces where God forms glory within a
person.

Character is shaped there.
Humility is formed there.
Authority is born there.

Glory that comes without surrender is fragile, like a house built on sand. But glory that
rises from the death of self carries weight, stability, and grace. The apostle Paul called it
“an eternal weight of glory” – something substantial, something lasting.

Perhaps that is why God often works slowly in us. Like a gardener who buries seeds before expecting fruit, God allows seasons where we feel hidden, misunderstood, or delayed. Yet heaven does not see these seasons as wasted time. They are preparation.

When self dies…

The seed beneath the soil may appear forgotten, but the farmer knows better. Something unseen is happening.

So if life feels quiet, if recognition seems distant, or if obedience feels costly, do not mistake the moment for abandonment. Sometimes God is not withholding glory; He is preparing the vessel that will carry it.

Because in the kingdom of God, the paradox remains beautifully true:
When self dies, glory rises.
And what appears buried today may very well become tomorrow’s harvest.

Every race has moments when a runner stumbles. The athlete who was moving with confidence suddenly finds himself on the ground, the rhythm of the race interrupted. For a brief moment, the stadium grows quiet. Spectators watch closely to see what happens next.

The fall itself is not what defines the runner.

The rising does.

Life often mirrors this scene. Plans collapse unexpectedly. Doors that once appeared open suddenly close. A season that began with promise may end with disappointment. In those moments, many people quietly begin to believe that their fall has become their final story.

Yet Scripture consistently challenges that conclusion.

The Bible speaks with honesty about human weakness, but it also reveals the resilience that comes from walking with God. Faith does not guarantee a life without setbacks; rather, it offers the strength to rise again.

In Proverbs 24:16, we read:

“For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again,
But the wicked shall fall by calamity.”

Notice the emphasis. The verse acknowledges the fall, but it celebrates the rising. The righteous may stumble repeatedly, yet they rise again because God sustains them.

Nature itself reflects this pattern. After the harsh stillness of winter, the earth begins to stir quietly beneath the soil. Branches that appeared lifeless suddenly produced new buds. What seemed like the end of life becomes the beginning of renewal.

Lessons from the life of Samson

Scripture illustrates this truth powerfully through the life of Samson.

Samson was a man of extraordinary strength and divine calling. Yet his story is also marked by painful mistakes. Through compromise and poor judgment, he lost his freedom and even his sight. The champion of Israel was reduced to grinding grain in a Philistine prison.

It appeared to be the end of his story.

Yet in the middle of that humiliation, the Bible quietly records a remarkable detail in Judges 16:22:

“However, the hair of his head began to grow again after it had been shaven.”

At first glance, this seems like a simple observation. But spiritually it reads like the first light of dawn after a long night. Growth had begun again. Strength was returning.

God was not finished.

Restoration often begins quietly. Before the miracle becomes visible, something unseen is already changing beneath the surface.

Eventually Samson turned again to God in prayer, and the Lord answered him. Though his life had been marked by failure, it also ended with redemption and renewed purpose.

His story reminds us of a simple but profound truth: the ground may be where someone falls, but it is not where God intends them to remain.

This truth resonates deeply in our contemporary world. Many people today carry silent struggles—financial setbacks, personal disappointments, or seasons of uncertainty. In a culture that often celebrates success and hides failure, falling can feel isolating.

But the message of Scripture speaks directly into those moments.

The apostle Paul describes this resilient faith in 2 Corinthians 4:8–9:

“We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.”

Those final words echo with hope: struck down, but not destroyed.

For those who trust in God, falling is never the final chapter. Grace continues to work quietly, patiently restoring strength and renewing vision.

That is why the prophet declares boldly in Micah 7:8:

“Do not rejoice over me, my enemy;
When I fall, I will arise;
When I sit in darkness,
The LORD will be a light to me.”

It is a declaration of faith spoken in the middle of adversity. The fall is acknowledged, but the future remains secure in God’s hands.

Perhaps someone reading this reflection today feels as though life has pushed them to the ground.

Take heart.

The ground may have interrupted the journey, but it does not determine the destination.

Because in the kingdom of God, champions are not those who never fall.

They are those who rise again.

And by God’s grace, they rise stronger.

Keep walking in grace, growing in wisdom, and moving toward the glory God has prepared for you.

The Price and the Process of Glory

In an era defined by speed, process feels inconvenient.

We are conditioned to expect immediate results. Careers are launched overnight. Opinions are formed in seconds. Success is measured in metrics that are updated by the minute. The global culture rewards visibility, velocity, and virality.

Yet Scripture consistently reveals a different rhythm — one that values formation before manifestation.

The Apostle Paul writes:

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:17 (NKJV)

This verse reframes hardship in profound terms. Affliction is not described as meaningless suffering but as meaningful production. There is something being formed beneath pressure — something enduring, something weighty.

The Bible does not deny the reality of difficulty. It reveals its purpose.

The life of Joseph offers a compelling case study. As a young man, Joseph received a dream of future leadership (Genesis 37). The revelation was clear, but the timeline was not. Before authority came betrayal. Before influence came servitude. Before prominence came imprisonment.

Joseph’s Journey

Joseph’s journey reminds us that glory unfolds through process.

First, revelation does not eliminate refinement. Seeing the promise of God does not exempt anyone from preparation. Vision may be instantaneous, but maturity is incremental. The gap between calling and capacity is bridged by discipline.

Second, hidden faithfulness sustains public influence. Joseph demonstrated excellence in Potiphar’s house long before he governed a nation. In today’s world, where exposure often precedes development, Scripture teaches the opposite order: character before platform.

Third, delay is often divine alignment. Joseph’s prison season positioned him for a national crisis he alone could solve. What appeared to be stagnation was strategic placement. Many delays in life are not denials but divine timing at work.

This truth speaks powerfully to our current global climate. Around the world, individuals face economic strain, professional burnout, and increasing uncertainty. The temptation to pursue shortcuts is real. Yet history repeatedly confirms that what is built without depth rarely endures.

Glory without integrity collapses under pressure.

The biblical pattern is clear: internal development precedes external expansion. Strength must exist before weight can be carried.

  • For professionals, this means allowing the process to refine competence.
  • For leaders, it means choosing integrity over speed.
  • For families, it means building foundations before pursuing scale.
  • For communities of faith, it means deepening roots before widening branches.

The question, then, is not simply whether we desire glory. The deeper question is whether we are willing to endure the process that sustains it.

Because what God forms slowly, He establishes securely.

And what He establishes securely carries glory that lasts.
